The Hunter Valley Equine Research Foundation (HVERF) exists to foster and support research in horse health and husbandry for the benefit of breeders and trainers in the Hunter Valley and Australia.

The Research Center, based outside Scone, has laboratory, autopsy, meeting and accommodation facilities. These facilities are made available for researchers in approved projects.

The vision of Hunter Valley Equine Research Foundation (HVERF) is to be a cohesive, strong and highly respected charitable organisation providing an outstanding field station base for the conduct of proactive and productive industry-focused equine research in the Hunter Valley and throughout Australia.

The HVERF will commission research that aims to increase the value and profitability of the horse industry in the Hunter Valley, NSW and Australia by generating scientific and technical knowledge resulting in improvements in the health, productivity and welfare of horses.

The HVERF seeks to fulfil its vision and mission through the following goals:

  • Planning, commissioning and promoting research projects designed to benefit horses
  • Publishing books, pamphlets, perspectives, bulletins and seminar proceedings on horse topics
  • Providing objective direction for advice and support in the horse industry
  • Providing a custom designed resource for the secure and safe conduct of extension, education and research in horses including administration, accommodation, laboratory and autopsy facilities
  • Providing a competitive edge for the horse industry locally and nationally through industry-driven research and development
  • Provide opportunity for education, training and the dissemination of new knowledge of significance to the horse industry
  • Achieve international recognition for excellence in equine research and foster national and international collaboration
  • Provide an archive for storage of the rich history and heritage of horses in the Hunter Valley
  • Promoting humane education programmes designed to encourage respect for horses and responsible stewardship in the local community
  • Promoting and conduct research in all matters pertaining to horse welfare in the local, national and international domain
